At the end of her internship at the Association for Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS), Mary Gurgone was delighted to receive Marjorie's reflections on her AfCAS experience as follows:

What did you expect to achieve with the internship?

My goal was to gain practical experience of local operations and values in Australia, and to have the opportunity to be closely involved in community work. Additionally, I aimed to further develop skills relevant to my field of study in Human Resources. Although this internship does not directly align with my major, the experience and knowledge gained in event planning and coordination will be undoubtedly beneficial my future career.

How Did You Find the Internship Experience at AfCAS?

My experience at AfCAS has been truly enriching. Working with a supportive team of colleagues made this a wonderful experience. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to organise an event for our volunteer visitors, which developed my business skills. Beyond the technical aspects, the internship deepened my understanding of Australian aged care services and the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

What were Some Highlights of the Experience?

Having previously worked in business organisations, I was used to communicating in a professional and serious tone through emails and announcements. It was eye-opening for me to discover ways to be kinder, more dynamic and in line with the commitment and image of non-for-profit organisation. Besides, the focus on marketing and sharing improved my graphic design and promotional skills. In addition, participating in volunteer visitor training activities has deepened my awareness and understanding of roles in not-for-profit organisations.

Any other comments?

I am grateful to the McCusker Centre for Citizenship and the University of Western Australia for providing me with this opportunity. I also sincerely thank  AfCAS for welcoming me into the internship program. Special appreciation goes to Mary Gurgone, Chair of AfCAS, for her invaluable guidance throughout my time with AfCAS and her dedication to serve CALD seniors.
